Specialist Subject Areas

Specialist teachers further enhance the curriculum

There is a wide choice of specialist subject areas offered at Buckley House and these include Physical Education, Japanese, Art, Music, Instrumental Program and Library studies.

Physical Education and Sport

Buckley House offers a comprehensive Physical Education and Sporting experience for all children.

On top of the weekly Physical Education classes, children are also involved in swimming lessons, Perceptual Motor Program classes and weekly after school sporting programs. Our school Auskick program is ranked in the top 30 in the state and gives the children a chance to play on the MCG or Telstra Dome every year!

Children in Years 3 to 6 develop their athleticism and fitness levels by being involved in Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics programs that all involve finishing with a school sports day. We also compete in organised championships in these three sports against other private schools in the AGSV.

Children in Years 5 and 6 also play weekly sport against other schools in the Ivanhoe district. Children compete in Winter and Summer sports such as Football, Netball, Softball, Volleyball, Rounders, Basketball, Soccer, Bat Tennis and Cricket. Often they are successful in the district and go on to represent the school in Zone, Regional and State championships.

Japanese

Children at Buckley House from ELC4 to Year 6 all learn Japanese.  The younger students (ELC4 – Year 3) have two, 30 minute lessons each week, while boys and girls in Years 4 – 6 have one 60 minute lesson each week.  The program uses an integrated curriculum model where possible, and cultural topics form an important part of developing tolerance and understanding of others.  A Native Speaker Assistant Teacher Program also operates, with a volunteer regularly hosted by the school to work within the Japanese language classes.

Science

Children from 3 year olds to Year 6 are taught Science. The aim of this exciting, innovative program is to foster a passion for science through discovery and scientific learning. This is achieved through a series of hands-on practical lessons where the children use scientific equipment and carry out investigations in the new, dedicated science room in the Innovation Centre.

Library

The Marjorie Gregory Library, located in Buckley House, is a bright and welcoming learning environment. A vast collection of picture fiction, fiction and non-fiction texts are available for student borrowing, including latest releases and the classics.

Lessons include information literacy, library skills, author and genre studies. Students also enjoy daily lunchtime activities in the library.
